The Circle of economists
The objective of the Circle of economists is to bring together academics who occupied positions, either private or public, to organize an economic debate.
The Circle of economists was created more than fifteen years. Its goal was simple: to bring together academics who occupied positions, either private or public, to organize an economic debate sorely absent at the time. Remember, this was the time of the franc fort policy which gave no alternative.
The Circle has grown and developed more and more activities.
Today, we are thirty :
Patrick Artus, Agnès Bénassy-Quéré, Jean-Paul Betbèze, Christian de Boissieu, Anton Brender, Pierre Cahuc, André Cartapanis, Jean-Michel Charpin, Jean-Marie Chevalier, Benoit Cœuré, Daniel Cohen, Elie Cohen, Michel Didier, Pierre Dockès, Lionel Fontagné, Marc Guillaume, Pierre Jacquet, Bertrand Jacquillat, Jean-Dominique Lafay, Jean-Hervé Lorenzi, Catherine Lubochinsky, Jacques Mistral, Olivier Pastré, Anne Perrot, Jean Pisani-Ferry, Jean-Paul Pollin, Dominique Roux, Christian Saint-Étienne, Christian Stoffaes et Daniel Vitry.
Vocation
The approaches of the members of the Circle are diverse. Their mission is not to produce joint proposals. A conviction, however, brings them together: the importance of an open, accessible to more respectful political positions but attentive to the facts and rigorous analysis.
The Circle of Economists gathers thirty economists economists, all academics and who exercise (or have exercised in the past) functions in the private or public sectors. Its mission is not to produce joint proposals because the approaches of its members are diverse. A conviction brings them together: the importance of an open, accessible to more respectful political positions but attentive to the facts and rigorous analysis.
The Circle of Economists main goal is to hold an economic debate, so that the confrontations between economists have the same density and quality elsewhere. The debate began, and is still followed with a daily chronicle on Radio Classique (these chronicles are published by Descartes), it was developed with the organization of a major public seminar on global finance, in partnership with Euronext, then with the Economic Forum of Aix-en-Provence, the publication of the Journal of the Circle and the award for best young economist, in partnership with The World Economy.
The debate began, and still continues with :
- A daily sequence of the Circle on Radio Classique.
- The Economic Forum of Aix-en-Provence who annually gathers, entrepreneurs, economists and polititians.
- Production, each year, of four or five Cahiers reflecting the work and debates of the Circle on today’s topics (deflation, corporate governance, Euro-Mediterranean university research, health economics).
- Handing-over, each year, the price of Best young economist, in partnership with The World Economy.
- The annual organization of a large public seminar on global finance, in partnership with Euronext.
In a word, the Circle of Economists still has many projects in France, confrontations between economists have the same density and quality than elsewhere.
